The Monster Ability Score calculator for Dungeons and Dragons, Fifth Edition, lets you create custom ability scores for your homebrew monsters.
How to Use the Calculator:
- Set the Goal CR to your desired Challenge Rating. This sets the Target CR Point Budget.
- Adjust the Ability Scores (STR, DEX, CON, INT, WIS, CHA).
- As you adjust the ability scores the calculator will total the score, and display it as a percentage of the recommended total. The percentage will display in green when the score is within 20% of the budget. It will display in orange outside of that range.

How the Monster Ability Score Calculator Works:
This calculator is an extension of the Point Buy method for D&D 5e character creation. I assigned values for the ability scores outside of the range already established. I did an analysis of monsters and determined an average number of points for each given CR. There is plenty of wiggle room in the numbers, due to the small number of monsters available at some levels (for instance, zero at level 29).
A few things to note:
- Celesital creatures typically have higher ability scores across the board. As a result, they are typically well above the average range for a given Challenge Rating.
- Giants typically have higher scores in STR and CON. As a result, they are typically well above the average range for a given Challenge Rating.
- Undead creatures typically have low scores in INT, WIS and CHA. Depending on type, they may also have very low DEX as well. As a result, they are typically well below the average range for a given Challenge Rating.
- Constructs often have very low INT, WIS and CHA. As a result, they are typically well below the average range for a given Challenge Rating.
