I’m always looking for a few good monsters for the arena. The relentless juggernaut from Ravenloft: The Horrors Within really fills the bill. Skip over the one from the older Van Richten’s Guide to Ravenloft. It’s just not as good. You’ll find this one on page 263.

What makes the relentless juggernaut so good? The variety of attacks this thing has is great. It has a melee attack with its sword. It does a solid amount of damage and also reduces the target’s speed by 10 feet. Even better is it’s 60-foot ranged attack that incapacitates on a hit. That’s very handy if you need to break a barbarian’s rage, or a spellcaster’s concentration. On top of that you get a 10 HP regeneration, legendary resistances, and legendary actions.
I haven’t fully reviewed the creatures in R:TW, but the way this relentless juggernaut is written reminds me a lot of the way newer creatures have been written for 2024. WOTC seems to have improved how they approach creature design. Like this creature, newer monsters are stronger and have more distinctive actions than I’ve seen in older-ediiton monsters. Check out the way dragons have been rewritten as a prime example.
The Relentless Juggernaut in Combat
The relentless juggernaut is a CR 12 fiend, making it a high difficulty encounter for a party of four level 9 players. That’s under the 2024 encounter building scheme. Despite the fact that this is a bit of a step up from last edition, I think you’ll find that your players won’t be as challenged as you might like if they aren’t a little depleted on resources.
Good talk? I thought so. Your players are going to need some help with the relentless juggernaut. Maybe get them some nice magic items to help them along?
