The Strixhaven Oracle from Strixhaven: A Curriculum of Chaos (SCC), recently made her first appearance in the DungeonSports Coliseum, and this creature is a blast to run. One thing that differentiates humanoid creatures from other monsters is that many humanoids have a variety of ranged and melee attacks that make them more useful fighting as a unit and employing battle tactics.
The Oracle is no exception in this aspect. She has good melee attacks and a nice list of spells, including one shot of power word stun. This creature is a CR 15, and so is a deadly encounter for a group of 4 level 10 PCs, which will be at significant risk from that spell right out of the gate. Legendary actions? She’s got those too! This one’s my favorite:
This legendary action give the Oracle control over the position of combatants. She can hold an attack action and then teleport an opponent next to her. Then, the Oracle could teleport them away again if there’s time. She could also place them next to her fighter friend with sentinel, so if they try to come back they’ll pay the price. She could also post up in a high tower and use this ability to control the battlefield from above. If anybody did manage to get close to her, she could teleport them safely away before they did too much damage.
Strixhaven Oracle – My One Gripe
No offensive cantrips. All I need is one. She’s a high-level wizard for goodness sake. Indeed, this matters a lot to me in the Coliseum because I run monsters unmodified. However it’s less of an issue in a regular game, as you can just give her firebolt and you’re all set!
Wanna know what other monsters are on my Hotlist? Or, maybe instead of the deadliest you want monsters that provide interesting challenges in and out of combat? Check out my Blocklist.
