The Fortress Arena is one of the player’s favorite battlemaps in the DungeonSports Coliseum. It’s also one that I make available even for higher-level players. Although it is relatively compact, the building offers a variety of tactical options. It breaks up lines of sight. This forces players to move and give enemies places to hide.

Layout of the Fortress Arena
The right side of the fortress battlemap, across the bridge and behind the wall, is the starting zone for one team of gladiators. This area is especially useful when larger creatures are being used in combat, as they may not fit well inside of the fortress. The fortress itself has two large front doors that open into a main hall. North of the main hall is a dining room, table set with fantasy culinary delights. The kitchen is to the east of that room, with a stove, and a collapsed wall that allows another point of access to the fortress.
On the south side of the main hall is a door to the barracks. This room is connected to the moat via a water feature. Like the water feature in the dining room, this allows creatures with a swim speed to move between areas of the Fortress Arena. Lastly, there is a throne room on the east end of the main hall. Windows at the back of the room can be used as (probably noisy) entrances/exits. To the south of the throne room is a master bedroom, with another useful window.
I use a slightly modified version of the Fortress Arena map on Foundry VTT for the Coliseum. That version of the map excludes the doors. This allows me to use Foundry’s animated doors features. I also have a tile for the roof, and a second layer that maps out the pipes that connect the moat to the water features inside the building.
Feel free to use the Fortress Arena in your games and check out other Map Assets here on DungeonSports!
